Etimology

Translated from Greek, christ means 'anointed one' and the prefix 'anti-' means opposite or against. It can also mean 'in place of'. So the word means, essentially, 'against Christ'.

The Antichrist in Christianity

The idea of an antichrist can take one of two meanings within Christianity. First, 'antichrist' can refer to anyone or thing that goes 'against Christ and/or his message'. In Christian eschatology, the Antichrist, or anti-Christ, typically is seen as a person who will rise to power as a messiah like figure that will lead people astray during the Tribulation Period as a world dictator/political figure. Some believe the Antichrist to be a political entity rather than a person and others believe still that the idea of an Antichrist is to be taken figuratively.

Nostradamus and the antichrist

Nostradamus, a French divinator and writer of quatrains, wrote that their would be three Antichrists that would rise before the end of time. The first is recognized as Napoleon Bonaparte. The second is generally thought to be Hitler. The third has yet to rise and his identity is, naturally, an enigma. All that is known is what he is known as in Nostradamus' quatrains, which is 'Mabus'.
