Conspiracy theory

A conspiracy theory is a hypothesis that attempts to explain a disputed case or matter as a plot by a secret group or alliance rather than an individual or isolated act. In other words, an attempt to describe a suspected conspiracy. One who studies or alleges a conspiracy theory might be called a conspiracy theorist.

Sometimes the phrase "conspiracy theory" is used in an attempt to dismiss allegedly false, paranoid or outlandish rumors. A conspiracy theory might contradict what was or is represented as the "mainstream" explanation for one or more current or historical events.
