LuciferFrom TinWiki.org
Lucifer is the name given frequently to Satan in Christian belief. In Latin, the word Lucifer, meaning Light Bringer, is a name for the Morning Star (the planet Venus in its dawn appearances). The name Lucifer is not used in the New Testament, where the bearer of light is Christ. Lucifer was once one of the Seraphim (sometimes called the fiery, flying serpents). Later authors refer to Lucifer as the greatest of the fallen angels. Lucifer is generally considered to have been a prominent archangel in heaven, prior to being motivated by pride to rebel against God. When his rebellion failed, he was cast out of heaven, along with a third of the heavenly host, and came to reside on earth. His banishment was because of his complete egotixn and pure malice, his sin and pride. Lucifer was the first angel to have sinned. Some say that Lucifer is always allowed back into heaven. There are characters similar to Lucifer in other mythologies. In Egypt, there is a serpent god who is the father of lightning and who fell to earth called Sata. The Babylonian god, Zu, was also a lightning god who fell as a fiery flying serpent. According to some magicians, Lucifer rules over the East, commanding the Europeans and Asians. He is often referred to as the king of hell, superior to Satan according to some demonologists. Some say he is facetious, with the face of a beautiful child which changes to monstrous and inflamed when angry. He is sometimes described as gray, with blue arms and red culottes decorated with ribbons, a lover of justice in hell, the first to be invoked in litanies of the Sabbath.
[edit] Satan as LuciferThe Lucifer myth was transferred to Satan in the pre-Christian century, citing support in the story of Adam and Eve where Satan is described as having been one of the archangels. Christian writers identify Lucifer with Satan, who also is represented as being cast down from heaven. Liberal Christian scholars often deny the existence of a personal being called Satan, thus rendering the story of Lucifer, his rebellion, and his fall irrelevant. They argue that the name Satan merely means "adversary' or "accuser". [edit] AstronomyBecause Venus (Lucifer) is an inferior planet, meaning its orbit lies between the orbit of Earth and the sun, it can never rise high in the sky at night as seen from Earth. It can be seen in the eastern morning sky for an hour before the sun rises and in the western evening sky for an hour after the sun sets, but never during the dark of night. It is the brightest object in the sky after the sun and the moon. Ancient people couldn't understand why they couldn't see it at midnight, like the outer planets, or at noon, like the sun and the moon. It outshines the planets Saturn and Jupiter, which do last all night, but soon disappear. Some believe they invented myths of Lucifer wanting to take over the thrones of the gods Saturn and Jupiter, resulting in Lucifer being cast out of heaven. [edit] FreemasonryLeo Taxil originated a perception that Freemasonry was associated with worshipping Lucifer. He claimed that leading Freemason Albert Pike had addressed "The 23 Supreme Confederated Councils of the World", telling them that Lucifer was God. He promoted a book that allegedly revealed a highly secret ruling body called the Palladium which controlled the organization and had a Satanic agenda. Taxil's claims were a hoax and proven as such, but details continue to be quoted by anti-masonic groups. [edit] The OccultIn modern occultism, Lucifer's identification as the morning star (Venus) equated him with Lumiel, the Archangel of Light, and among Satanists, he is seen as The Torch of Baphomet and Azazel. In these teachings, Lucifer's destiny is to incarnate in human form at certain times in world history as a savior and redeemer for humanity. A symbol for this process is the Tudor Rose; it can be red, representing Lucifer, or white, representing Lilith. The Tau cross is also a symbol of Lucifer and his role as an avatar for the human race. In the Satanic Bible, Lucifer is acknowledged as one of the Four Crown Princes of Hell, especially that of the East. He is referred to as the Lord of the Air, bringer of light, the morning star, intellectualism, and enlightenment.
