Mars is the fourth closest planet to the Sun, which is to say the next one out from Earth.

The planet Mars has a very thin atmosphere, with frozen carbon dioxide and water ice at the poles.

Pictures and robotic exploration of the surface show areas that could have previously been covered by oceans.

Since the 1970s, fairly good photographs have been taken of the surface by space probes sent there by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

There are several plans to further explore planet Mars, both by NASA and other space agencies.

Moons Of Mars

Mars has two small moons that are both tidally locked. Similar to Earth's moon, one side can only be viewed from the surface of the planet.

Phobos

Phobos has an orbital speed that exceeds the rotation of the planet and in the future with be torn apart by gravitational forces and impact the surface of Mars.

Deimos

Due to it's unusual shape the moon has dimensions of 15 × 12.2 × 10.4 km.

It maintains a mostly equatorial and spherical orbit.
