Nibiru, in the writing of Zecharia Sitchin and others, is a moon of the planet Marduk (an either unknown or undisclosed twelfth major body of the solar system, or Tenth Planet; the sun and moon are the other two.)

Introduction

Nibiru means "Ferry Boat" or "Crossing Place" in Akkadian, and is sometimes called "The Planet of the Crossing". Another theory about Nibiru is that it is the flagship of the Milky Way's division of the Galactic Federation.

According to Sitchin, ancient mythology figuratively describes the collision of this moon, and then the planet it orbits, with a proto-Earth called Tiamat. This results in the creation of our Earth and the Asteroid Belt.

Myth

The Enuma Elish describes a war in heaven. The most relevant section is that Marduk slays the water dragon Tiamat ("Mother of Life") and fashions heaven and Earth from her corpse. He then creates mankind from the blood of another God who sided with Tiamat and establishes Babylon as the home of the Gods.

Interpretation

According to Sitchin, Marduk is a planet with a highly eccentric 3,600 year orbit with an apogee that takes it beyond Pluto, but an Perigee that brings it across Earth's orbit.

One of it's moons, Nibiru, is home to an advanced alien race of giants, the Annunaki or Nephilim, who have been visiting Earth for nearly 500,000 years to mine gold. One explanation is that gold must be dispersed in their atmosphere to trap heat radiated from the planet's core during the majority of its orbital cycle, while it is too far from the sun to be sufficiently warmed. They created mankind to serve them in this capacity.

On one pass, however, the events figuratively described in the Enuma Elish took place. Nibiru struck the proto-Earth Tiamat, followed by Marduk. This process divided the continents, creating the asteroid belt. This event caused havoc on Earth.

Other passes have been cataclysmic as well, according to believers. During its passage somewhere between 1600 and 1500BC it is supposed to have caused Thera to erupt, caused the miracles which freed the Hebrews from Egyptian captivity, and perhaps even somehow caused a carbohydrate compound known as Abrosia or Manna to form. It's next pass is popularly suggested to be around 2012, although Sitchin has named a date of 2084.

Parallels to Christianity

The book of Genesis seems to borrow some from Mesopotamian mythology. Creation occurs in the same order in Genesis and the Enuma Elish, starting with light and ending with man. Tiamat, the water dragon who is divided to create heaven and Earth, may share an etymological root with the Hebrew "Tehom," meaning "The Deep". This word is used in Genesis 1:2, in which it is divided into the firmament of heaven, creating the world.

The war in heaven featuring a dragon is also an obvious parallel, and results in angels being cast down to Earth. Hence the reference to Annunaki as Nephilim in some instances.

Skeptics views

The most prominent criticism of the theory comes from scholars who dispute Sitchin's translations of the source documents. Zecharia Sitchin, whatever his linguistic abilities may be, does not actually have a degree in any field of anthropology. They argue that Marduk is actually associated with Jupiter, not a 10th planet.

Others argue that if an advanced alien intelligence had inhabited Earth that there would be lasting evidence. Although throughout history, in every culture, in every legend, "gods" from the stars are mentioned.

Possible supporting evidence

It is believed that Earth's moon was created by an impact with a large body sometimes dubbed Orpheus, but this would have happened long before life on Earth. Radiometric data shows the Moon's crust to have formed only 20-30 million years after Earth's.

The continuous discovery of large bodies in the Kuiper Belt has also stimulated speculation as to what might be lurk in the depths of our solar system. Two particularly large objects, 2003UB_313, informally called Xena, and its fellow recent discovery, Sedna, have been especially interesting to Planet X believers. Some of believers in Planet X think that there is a Brown Dwarf star slightly beyond the Kuiper Belt.
