PoltergeistFrom TinWiki.org
Poltergeist is literally translated as noisy ghost. It is a supernatural phenomenon where objects seem to move on their own, or sounds such as knocking can be heard, without any explainable source. Some evidence suggests areas with large limestone deposits have a higher number of reported poltergeist incidents.
[edit] Origins[edit] ParapsychologicalVarious parapsychologists believe that poltergeist incidences are psychokinetic creations of the victim's mind, created due to psychological trauma or change (e.g., puberty or menopause). [edit] Imprint theoryThere is also a notion that ghosts and poltergeists are emotional imprints upon a particular location that have been inadvertantly left by individuals. [edit] Historical incidentsThere is a pamphlet being held in the British Museum which talks about a poltergeist haunting called "lithoblia" or stone throwing devil. This disturbance occurred at Great Island in New Hampshire, New England -- it was the family of George Walton who suffered from this haunting, it is said that the hauntings may of been from infernal Spirits or Witches. Its main attacking way was to throw stones and brick bats from all different sizes; it is claimed that hammers among other things were also thrown. Chillingham castle is a place in the North of the United Kingdom near Durham which is haunted by ghosts, poltergeists and many other things. [edit] In popular culturePoltergeist was the main topic in the 1982 film Poltergeist and its sequels. [edit] References
