The STARGATE unit was basically experimental, but over time they were increasingly called in to aid field operations. One of their first missions was to help locate a downed Soviet TU22 fighter - bomber, that crashed somewhere in interior Zaire. Both the Air Force and the CIA were looking for the wreckage, but were unsuccessful. Eventually the Air Force asked for the help of the remote viewers at Fort Meade, and they were apparently able to find the aircraft. This was confirmed (years after the incident) by President Jimmy Carter, who recounted how a female telepath had located the TU22 and given satellite coordinates for the site. He was quoted as saying: "She told us where to look, we looked there, and there it was."

Missions

After the success of the TU22 mission the unit was called in on other assignments. They attempted to find hostages who were being held in Iran and Lebanon. They located a Soviet Typhoon-class super submarine at one point and in 1979 STARGATE cautioned of a Chinese misfired underground nuclear weapon test. STARGATE sent 183 reports to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, including a prediction of a rocket attack by the Iranian military on the USS Starke, the results of attempts to locate kidnapped US General William Dozier, who had been abducted by the Italian terrorist organization the Red Brigades. They even tried to locate possible Americans who were being held in Vietnam, and tried to view the whereabouts of the famous terrorist, Carlos the Jackal. It was rumored that STARGATE was being employed by customs, the DEA and the coast guard for the purpose of drug smuggling interdiction, however this isn't proven as it is constitutionally forbidden for the CIA to involve itself with domestic law enforcement.

STARGATE's Progress

STARGATE seemed to be progressing and enjoying some positive results, despite it's problems with law and science. However, there were problems, and they grew as the unit made headway. There seemed to be some odd side-effects from remote viewing, such as the viewer being in an almost trance-like state for several hours after a session. As well some viewers displayed bizarre behavior during that time frame. More trouble seemed to be brewing from the more traditional sections in the military. The existence of STARGATE split the CIA and the Pentagon into two opposing camps. The military believed that having the CIA spending money to investigate the paranormal was the greatest example of foolishness ever to come out of Langley. On the other hand was the general paranoia of the CIA, fearing that the Soviets were researching remote viewing and enjoying some success in a field that. If true, it could potentially be the greatest intelligence gathering tool ever dreamed of.

Area 51 Viewed

One strange incident occurred during a remote viewing session. The unit was given the task of viewing secret Soviet experimental aircraft. One telepath repeatedly drew images of a bat-like craft, with a strange v-shaped tail. These drawings were routinely taken away from him and nothing more was ever said on the subject. It wasn't until years later, with the unveiling of the US Stealth fighter-bomber that his visions seemed to make sense. Instead of penetrating Russian R&D labs and airfields, he had somehow psychically surfaced within the ultra-secret Area 51.

STARGATES's Demise

STARGATE ran until 1995, when it was brought before the US Congress for review. Despite some amazing successes it was still argued that there was no science backing these paranormal claims. Many in the government felt that the success they did enjoy was just the result of hit or miss luck. In the end, Congress could not justify spending over 20 milion dollars on something that many scoffed at. At the end of 1995 STARGATE was unceremoniously shut down.
