Proxima Centauri

Proxima Centauri is located with the Centaurus constellation. It is only 4.22 light years away from the sun and therefore the closet star to us. It was discovered by Robert Innes in 1915 while director of the South African Union Observatory in Johannesburg. When this star was found it was thought that the name Proxima Centuari would be a fitting name, in Latin the word proximus means 'nearest to' or 'next to' both are fitting to this star; Centauri because it lies within the Alpha Centauri star system.

Type

This star is belived to be a red dwarf and is also categorized as a Flare Star, it is known that Proxima Centauri undergoes many random increases in lumionisity because of some Magnetic activity. It is thought that this flare star is approximatly one seventh the size of our Sun.
