Proxima Centauri is located with the Centaurus constellation. It is only 4.22 light years away from the sun and therefore the closet star to us. It was discovered by Robert Innes in 1915, this was whilst he was the director of the south african Union Observatory which is in Johannesburg. When this star was found it was thought that the name Proxima Centuari would be a fitting name, in Latin the word proximus means 'nearest to' or 'next to' both are fitting to this star; Centauri because it lies within the Alpha Centauri star system.

This star is belived to be a red dwarf and is also categorized as a Flare Star, it is know that Proxima Centauri undergoes many random increases in lumionisity because of some Magnetic activity. It is thought that this flare star is approximatly one seventh the size of our Sun.

It has crossed many a mans mind that Proxima Centauri would be a great first destination in our inter-travel plans for the future, although at our current speeds it would take around 32,000 years to get there. So there is alot to be done to increase the speed so that the journey can be done within a rational time frame.
