RAF SnowbirdFrom TinWiki.orgRAF Snowbird was an advanced experimental aircraft squadron from 1963-2004, specializing in prototype & proof of concept aircraft. Based mainly at RAF Leuchars in Fife (but also for short periods at RAF Kinloss or RAF Saxa Vord dependent on program requirements) with a small staff of 10-20 specialists, mainly drawn from the military and/or secret services. The most prominent projects that were created were the Harrier replacemnt aircraft Stormfalcon (also known under project title Phoenix, from 1977-1989), of which components were integrated into the new declassified JSF aircraft, and Redwind, (1981-2002) believed to be an attempt at a British hypersonic tactical aircraft, the outcome of which is currently being further developed by the US Air Force. From 1985 to 2004, RAF Snowbird was slowly integrated into the USAF experimental aircraft program, with the exchange of resources and expertise, which resulted in the takeover of the squadron by the US in 2004, and the staff redeployed to other projects/ retirement. Many of UFO sightings over the North Sea, Northern Scotland, and Southern Norway over the time period can be traced back to test flights from Snowbird.
