Raël (formerly known as Claude Vorilhon) is the founder of the Raëlian Church. He was born in Vichy, Allier, France on September 30, 1946.

Who was Claude Vorilhon

Claude Vorilhon was born in Vichy, Allier, and was raised in Ambert.
Scandal surrounded Vorilhon 's birth. His mother Colette, had an affair during World War II with a man referred to as "Marcel X." He was a married man. From this union came Claude Vorilhon, born out of wedlock.
When Claude was 7, Colette left him with his aunt Thérèse.
Thérèse says Vorilhon was a very gentle boy. She is still fond of him and calls him "little Claudy." Thérèse never had a child and raised “Claudy” as if he were her own son.

At the age of 15 Claude Vorilhon left Ambert for Paris hoping to become an entertainer. Vorilhon, under the stage name Claude Celler, recorded a few music albums between 1966 and 1971. The music was inspired by his idol Jacques Brel.

Not long after his singing career fizzled Claude met Christine, whom he married in 1971. Together they had two children. Christine Vorilhon says that their marriage was troubled. She says she was "completely destroyed by her husband." The marriage ended in 1985.

Vorilhon made one more failed attempt at a career before becoming Rael. While he lived with his wife and children in Clermont-Ferrant, he founded a motor racing magazine called Auto Pop. After a brief run in 1973 it went under and folded.

Extra-terrestrial Encounters

Raël claims that he has had two encounters with extra-terrestrials, which are the foundation of The Raelian Movement.
The first of these encounters was on December 13, 1973. While in Puy de Lassolas, Vorilhon claims to have seen a landing flying saucer. An extraterrestrial being came out of the craft and told him (in French) that he had come to meet him and give him a message and that it was Vorilhon's mission to pass this message on to people in every nation. The ET gave him the prophet name Raël, which means The Messenger of the Elohim.
The extra-terrestrials visited him once again and took him to their home planet. There he claims he met with Buddha, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad and received many teachings.
