Reverse Engineering

Reverse Engineering is technical jargon for determining how to create a product by obtaining an example of it and taking it apart. For instance, a person could learn how a radio works by getting one, taking it apart, and testing its components. One could conceivably build a radio from that experience, or apply the knowledge and technical insight gained from it to understand the general technology.

It has been alleged that various breakthrough technologies have been the result of human technicians reverse engineering extra-terrestrial devices. It has also been alleged that various nations have obtained examples of top secret technology illegaly, and then reverse engineered their own localized versions of it. This is said to happen with both military weapon systems and civilian technology.
