Secret handshakes have been used throughout history as a covert method of in-group communication, particularly to demonstrate affiliation, to request assistance, and then to indicate recognition in response. These hand shakes are known to be used by some secret societies like the Freemasons as a way of their members telling each other that they are indeed members. It shows a loyalty to the clan, lodge or club. To reveal a secret handshake would be taboo and would cause the offending individual to be thought of as a traitor. Freemasons have a series of handshakes that are revealed to members as they rise in rank in the organization.
