On October 4th, 1967, at 2345 local time, a RCMP officer and six other witnesses spotted a large, unidentified flying object.

This object, in the space of about five minutes, flew down to the water, hovered and then sank. This is what eventually came to be known as the Shag Harbour UFO incident.

Eyewitness Accounts

The object was described as being 60 feet in diameter, with four white lights spaced horizontally about fifteen feet apart. The object, flying in an easterly direction, descended rapidly and hit the water. When it did, there was a bright flash of white light. One of the lights remained lit for some time, but the object sank before a boat could reach it. The Rescue Co-ordination Center conducted a preliminary investigation and concluded that the object was not an aircraft, flares, floats or other known objects. On October 5th, Maritime Command was requested to investigate. Divers searched the area but could find no debris or anything that could help explain what the object was.
