The Solar System is the name given to our system of planets that orbit a central star referred to as the Sun or Sol. The system is bound together by the gravitational pull exerted by the center star. This star and our solar system in turn orbits a central galactic black hole.

Many other names have been ascribed to our star but most English speaking people just refer to the star as "The Sun".

Our known solar system consists of 1 star, 8 planets, 4 dwarf planets, 166 or more known moons, and millions if not billions of small bodies in orbit or captured by the Sun and it's planets.

This article should attempt to define each body in the Solar System.

The Star, Eight Planets & Assorted Bodies

Planets from the Sun outwards:

The smaller bodies are called asteroids, comets, planetoids, etc... Many of these objects orbit in the Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud, though a large number enter or inhabit the inner part of the system and could endanger the Earth.

Pluto was considered a small planet for many years, but in 2008 a general categorization of our solar system was made, it was decided that everything could be classified into a neat order.

Ceres, Pluto, Makemake and Eris have all been placed in the Dwarf Planet section.

The Sun is the center of our Solar System.

Refer to the complete article: Sun.

The Sun can be defined as the star that anchors all orbital bodies considered to be part of the solar system. The star provides most of the energy that effects the other bodies in the system and provides the gravitational pull that holds the solar system together.

The Sun alone accounts for 99.8% of all the mass in our Solar System and is considered a G2 class star.

Without a central star the planets would never have formed and any forming bodies would drift through space due to the lack of a gravitational anchor.

The Earth in the third planet from the Sun and is mostly covered in water. 3/4th of the surface is oceans, lakes and rivers.

The planet is teaming with biological life and is currently thought to be the only planet with life on it within our known solar system.

It orbits the sun in approximately 365 1/4 days. The earth has 7 moons, one is the Moon we all know and see each night called Luna by astronomers. There are the additional 6, however, none can be seen with the naked eye, the largest of the others is Cruithne, which was named after the first known Celts.
