Sons of LibertyFrom TinWiki.org
The Sons of Liberty began life as The Loyal Nine, a small group of merchants and working-class individuals who for years had cooperated in matters of business and local government, functioning much like a modern-day Council of Governments. In 1765, the Stamp Act was passed, a British law which required all American colonies to pay a tax on every paper good imaginable, such as playing cards, writing paper, legal documents, and so on. Issac Barre, during an address to protestors, referred to them as the Sons of Liberty, and thus the name was born. However, an in-depth study into the history of this most mysterious group shows us that these men weren't all simple shopkeepers and artisans; it is said that the Sons Of Liberty played a highly direct role in the events leading up to the American Revolution, as well as the establishment of the original American colonies. We know that Paul Revere was one of the Sons, and that John Adams was the leader of the group, and possibly Benjamin Franklin. What we know of them is that they were a group of men who corresponded with a spying commitee known as the Committee of Correspondance. They would get their point through to the people and Britain by tarring and feathering tax collectors and other 'enemies' of the independance fighters. Today, there have been some links discovered to Freemasonry (and possibly cultist groups, but those are almost purely suspision so far). They played an important part in starting the American Revolution, such as sending people out to get colonial militia ready for incoming British troops attmepting to destroy colonial ammunition and weaponry and setting the war mood by making the British looking like trigger-happy military men in paintings of things such as the Boston Massacre. After the Revolution, it becomes difficult to trace the history and activities of the Sons of Liberty. However, the Improved Order of Red Men is a secret society that claims to have began as the Sons of Liberty. [edit] See also
