THX 1138

THX 1138 is the first film by George Lucas and was released on March 11, 1971. It was adapted from a short he had written and filmed earlier while in university. The film is based on a totalitarian society where love is forbidden and centers around one couple that rebels against the suppressive rules imposed on them.

The film can seem to have thematic similarities with the later Star Wars movies which Lucas is better known for, but the atmosphere and visual style of the movie is quite different and almost resembles some kind of art more than popular entertainment.

Plot

Humanity has moved underground to a strictly controlled futuristic society that has forbidden sex and uses drugs to enforce the laws. The main characters are jailed for violating the law by THX impregnating LUH. After meeting a man in prison the three people attempt an escape to the surface.
