This is troubling
I cannot figure out how to restore this page that has been deleted. :-\ William One Sac 12:16, 16 June 2008 (CDT)
- It may not be that big a problem, even if of course content should normally be kept. What I mean, though, is that this discussion should, at least as I see it, be about discussing the Main Page. From what I remember of this discussion, there wasn't necessarily very important (or even relevant?) discussion about the Main Page here.
- Not that I think I can help, but I will also try and see if I understand what's going on with the restoring. Optimist 12:30, 16 June 2008 (CDT)
The automatic restore function may not work, but it seems the version history list is working. Latest legitimate version seems to be viewable here. So, some copying and pasting could solve it.
Another thing is that somewhere in the history, some of the posts were deleted in relation to some spam deletions. These posts should be possible to find in the history and put back into discussion page, which has been (ahem) a thing I've been 'thinking' of doing for quite a while, now. Anyway, I think the whole page with all the legitimate posts can definitely be put back. Optimist 12:38, 16 June 2008 (CDT)
- Yes, I suppose you are right, it's not a great big deal. But I think we need to take steps to make certain this does not happen again with other pages. Cough Fox Cough. :-) William One Sac 12:44, 16 June 2008 (CDT)
Sly WOS, real Sly lol yer, sorry about this fellas i thought it was a spam bit, there was spam here,a ll it said was "COMMENT 1," that was it. Owell sorry, ill be more careful next time...Fox out
- Been there, done that. Meaning, I deleted a page by mistake when I was trying to revert spam/vandalism (in my case it was spam).
- So, speaking from experience, then :-), a tip is to notice in the Recent changes page if the edit is a page initiation (new page). If the edit was a page initiation, clicking rollback will give an error message saying that the page cannot be rolled back since there are no previous versions to roll back to. Then it makes sense to just Delete that page.
- If the edit is not a page initiation, and the diff link showing the changes made in the edit shows that it's spam/vandalism, then it's good to check the hist link. Because: if there's been a lot of edits lately, it could be that several edits to the same page, that need to be reverted, come from different IPs. When multiple IPs have spammed to one and the same page in a row, using the Rollback function is not practical since it will only revert to the spam version of the spammer that came before. So one will have to Rollback several times. Therefore, the better or simpler way is to go to the version history list, click on the latest legitimate version in the list, and then click the edit tab, and Save that latest legitimate version. That's what you could call a manual rollback, then.
- So, if a spam edit is a page creation, delete.
- If a spam edit is not a page creation, it could be good to check the history so a rollback doesn't just revert to a previous spam edit.
- In the Recent changes list, edits that are page creations have no link where it says "(diff)", so instead of "(diff)", it just says "(diff)". Then you know it's a page creation. Those edits also seem to have an N and a red ! as a kind of symbol (the "N" means "new", I guess, but the exclamation marks I'm not entirely sure what mean). So, anyway, the rule of thumb is to be cautious when using the Delete function on pages that have a history, that is, pages where the latest edit is not the edit that created that page. Anyway, I'm trying, like yourself, to be very careful when using the Delete function after I made that mistake. I've taken to sort of illustrate to myself that the page was indeed created by the spammer by including in the Delete reason for deletion the message that says the page cannot be rolled back since the last edit was the only edit (no earlier version to roll back to). captcha
This wiki's captcha does not seem to be working. According to mediawiki the captcha software will only work with MediaWiki 1.6+, and you have Mediawiki 1.5. That is why. --75.89.112.206 22:09, 19 June 2008 (CDT)
- Thanks. Hopefully the version will be updated in not too long. Optimist 02:11, 20 June 2008 (CDT)
- You need to upgrade to version 1.12.0. This version is more then 2 years old, and thats why you are overrun by spam. ----Signed by Elassint the Great Hi! 13:07, 20 June 2008 (CDT)
