Fixed up the article, but couldn't find sources for much of the information in the original. Does anyone have any sources? 75.110.246.35 21:51, 16 April 2008 (CDT)

Most cultures have myths about shapeshifters, many deities are part man and part animal. Satyrs, fauns, centaurs, the god Pan all were forerunners of were-creatures. They are not restricted to just wolves. All the manifestations of were-creatures imbue person/being with powers that extend beyond that of either individual part. Regeneration of injuries, superior senses, preternatural strength and a specific methodology for dispatching the creature. There is also the ability to disappear whenever capture or death is imminent. These abilities tend to tie these individuals to the realm of magic and mysticism. Wolfbane, silver and the pentagram in the palm or some other hidden aberration on the body. The Beast of Gervauden killed between 100-300 people (depending on source)in the late 1500's in France. To understand shapeshifters, one must understand the mechanism that is at work. The ability to change shape is not inherent in either man nor wolf. No combination of dna would allow for physical transformation, therefore there has to be another factor that will change the mutability of bone and sinew, that will allow muscle to change its course and physical properties and grow hair and a tail. There is a simpler solution that offers a more believable scenario while fulfilling all the requirements of the legend. All religions have their "unseen" people, angel, demons, Gods, d'jinn. The d'jinn according to the Qu'ran was created from a "smokeless fire", in modern terms they appeared like the heat shimmer that arises from hot pavement. These beings, created by the same God who created Man, hate man because man supplanted them in the eyes of, and favor of God. They are five tribes of them and two of which "feed" on man. These d'jinn (genies) are shapeshifters and working together, create the image of a man changing into a wolf, vice-versa, and/or simply vanish before amazed eyes. Other popular creatures they create are bigfoot, chupacabra and lake monsters. They have access to flight via the giant Thunderbirds and Pterodactyls and the ability to exist in the seas and lakes of the world. One being capable of mimicing all that they have knowledge of. It removes the magic and superstition and shines the light of reason upon beings using their natural invisibility and community to fool, befuddle and confuse humanity.
