[edit] HiPalzeta, Hello. I was looking at the Extraterrestrials page to just see how the visitors number was coming along there. That's the page it seems I've started to follow as far as that. I did notice your UFO Origin Navtable when you created it, but now I felt I wanted to just say that I think that's a quite interesting, valuable and really 'powerful' or 'potent', or some such word, addition to tinWiki. A really useful type of of feature that sort of opens a whole new way of adding functionality, that I at least think I haven't seen here before. It's not that I have any specific ideas just yet where else a similar Navtable could be used, but obviously it is a very practical and useful idea. The table in itself also looks very stylish, or such, and so I'm guessing you are experienced with using MediaWiki wikis (possibly from Wikipedia, I assume) and, specifically, also know a fair bit about wiki code and maybe also HTML. Feel free to make improvements if you come across some really cluttered wiki code here. I expect some of those who started up tinWiki had quite good knowledge, that's my impression, at least, but I don't think there are too many of us others who are here, right now, who are too experienced or know very much about wiki code and MediaWiki. Anyway, you've made some great and extremely interesting contributions, there. Optimist 16:38, 7 August 2008 (CDT) [edit] I certainly took my time...Palzeta, Sorry for replying so late. I'll reply here in your discussion, since I assume it's more likely you'll see it here than that you're checking my discussion for a reply this long after. No, tinWiki unfortunately doesn't get updated very often. As far as William One Sac (and I, for that matter), the server and all that 'stuff' actually is not something he has any access to doing anything with as far as changing or updating the wiki software. So he (and I) basically is only able to do things that any user with sysop status is able to do through the wiki pages themselves. The people who actually control the server and software seem to not update the software very often. I think the main focus is on the main site, which is, as you probably know, AboveTopSecret.com. We can hope the software will get updated in not too long, though. The coold tools you mention would probably be helpful improvements. Also, of course, the spam fighting CAPTCHA feature would be great to get to work.. Which is also something that requires a newer version of MediaWiki for actually working. Anyway, I hope you'll add stuff if you find something that's possible to do even with this version. The nav table is very nice. :-) Optimist 20:59, 27 August 2008 (CDT) [edit] Re: Given the recent vandalismPalzeta, Hi. Thank you for the message. Well, I certainly see that vandalism cases like these are an issue. I think it's probably one of the important things in a wiki that anyone is able to edit pages, and so for this reason, I'm not sure that tinWiki should limit editing access to people who registered. So, for now, I personally wouldn't agree with making that limitation that you mention. As for the ability to revert, that's one of the features that users have access to if their user account has sysop status. Now, tinWiki does in fact have a number of sysops -- but of these sysops, Fox is the only one that's seen in here regularly. So, as I see it, what might be a good solution for dealing with cases like this recent vandalism, is to have more users with sysop status to their account. A sysop could have blocked the vandal from editing any more, and if a sysop had been watching while the vandal was getting started -- like you were watching -- the vandal could have been blocked and would not have been able to do any more edits within the time limit set by the sysop who blocked him. (I have, by the way, now blocked the vandal's IP address, and set the block period to 3 years.) Another feature that sysops have access to, is a really simple rollback feature, that makes it fairly trivial to revert 50 pages or more in less than a minute... That feature is vastly more simple than reverting manually, and so I totally understand that you gave up after a while -- but I commend you for the initiative and effort you did put in. I want to ask you to consider becoming a sysop, Palzeta. I would support very much your getting that status, and, from what you've contributed, I imagine WOS might agree that you would be very good for tinWiki to have as a sysop. Again, thanks for the message, and I think it's great that you intervened and that you care about what happens here. Optimist 13:30, 14 September 2008 (CDT)
[edit] going to link up 9/11Reminder to myself to link up the 9/11 articles with nav table. — Palzeta (How's That?, That's How!) After I talked a little bit with William One Sac, who offered support, I have now made you Sysop. Congratulations on the new status! I think it's great that you want to take on the assignment. :-) I do think that with the new status, you are going to be of even more benefit to tinWiki. Optimist 07:58, 18 September 2008 (CDT)
