WikiFrom TinWiki.orgA wiki is a specific type of web site. The word wiki comes from Hawaiian, and means "fast". What makes a wiki page different from a normal web page, is that it has a button on it that can be clicked and which allows editing the page directly. This is not possible to do with normal web pages. In addition to editing an existing page, it is also possible to create entirely new pages in a wiki website. A wiki website can grow enormously in content and number of pages, this way. The world's largest encyclopedia, Wikipedia, is created this way. Wikis have existed for quite a few years, but it was mostly after Wikipedia was created that many Internet users became aware of this type of web site. There are now very many wikis, many of which use the software created for the famous Wikipedia, but there are many other types of wikis, also. There is a wide range of uses for wikis. Also, a wiki can have millions of users, for example if it is a wiki like Wikipedia, or a wiki can just be personal and be used by just one individual as an alternative to a normal word processor.
[edit] Possible future developmentsOne of the criticisms that may be heard against for example Wikipedia, is that the information may not be very dependable since anyone can write information anonymously in that encyclopedia. A new direction may be said to have been taken in Google's wiki-like encyclopedia Knol[1], where some of the familiar features of the famous Wikipedia are still found, but where the focus is shifted from simply being on the text content to also being fairly much on the person who contributed the information.
